ALS, 1790 Mar. 9, New York, to John Trumbull.

After giving Trumbull some advice on public life, Adams answers a number of accusations against himself apparently reported by Trumbull in a letter of Feb. 6. He gives an account of his ancestors, and his supporters and opponents in different parts of the country. He declares that he has no desire to be president but complains about the insignificance of the vice presidency. He defends his published opinions but declines to repeat or explain them at length, offers Trumbull three volumes of his writings and asks his opinions on them.
